The mental load
is the real work

Over a decade ago, I stepped away from my career to stay home with my daughter Emmeline. For two years, while my wife Kathleen went to work each morning, I became the person who managed everything — the house, the baby, the life that surrounds a family.

I learned something that fundamentally changed how I see the world. The hardest part of managing a life isn't any single task. It's the thinking. The constant mental inventory. The awareness that sits behind every moment of your day like an operating system you can never fully close.

Did I schedule the pediatrician? Do we have formula? Did I RSVP to that thing? What's the backup plan if she doesn't nap? When does that bill auto-pay?

It wasn't a to-do list. To-do lists have endings. This was a background process that never stopped running — and it wasn't unique to parenting. It was the shape of modern life.

Emmeline is thirteen now. That time at home was years ago. But the understanding has only deepened, because I've watched the same invisible weight in everyone around me. Not just parents — everyone. Friends managing careers and aging parents. Colleagues juggling deadlines and health decisions and financial planning and the social maintenance of keeping a life running.

Then AI arrived, promising to make us all more efficient. I've been deep in this world — building with it, believing in it. But it left me with a nagging feeling. A feeling that every single person I've talked to also shares.

I'm getting more done and I still feel overwhelmed.

Because efficiency isn't the problem. The mental burden is the problem. The weight of navigating your entire life — professional, personal, family — all running in your head simultaneously. That doesn't get lighter because a tool drafts your emails faster.

Here's Backlit's opinionated view: I could care less about automating pipeline generation for a small company. It's worthy. It matters. But it's not what haunts people at 11pm. What haunts them is the uncertainty: Is that thing handled? Can I stop thinking about it? Can it wait until tomorrow?

Backlit exists so you can genuinely trust that things are running. That you've truly delegated, not just assigned. So you can spend time with your teenager, walk the dog, be present with your partner — and actually be there. We need the digital equivalent of touching grass. Not another tool that makes you faster. A system that lets you put it down.

As AI handles more of the perfunctory work, aligning with and embracing our humanity becomes more important, not less. The noticing. The caring. The being fully present for the people and moments that matter. That's not a burden to optimize away. That's what makes us human.
